​NMA/Olay Awards

Community Impact Award
This award recognizes a dermatologist who has demonstrated outstanding commitment to improving the health and well-being of ethnic communities. Nominees have made significant contributions to public health initiatives, education, and access to dermatologic care, making a measurable difference in the lives of individuals and communities in need. Their work exemplifies dedication to addressing health disparities and promoting skin health awareness. The awardee must be a board certified dermatologist in the United States and a member of NMA Dermatology.

Criteria: Must exhibit a history of commitment in one or many of the following:

1. Advancement of Public Health Initiatives
   - Actively leads or contributes to public health campaigns focused on dermatologic care, skin health, or addressing dermatologic disparities in ethnic communities.
   - Demonstrates a commitment to improving access to dermatologic services for underserved or marginalized ethnic populations.

2. Educational Contributions
   - Has provided educational resources, training, or workshops that raise awareness about skin health issues specific to ethnic communities.
   - Develops or participates in community-based programs to educate individuals on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of dermatologic conditions affecting ethnic populations.
   - Creates culturally sensitive and accessible educational materials aimed at increasing skin health literacy in ethnic communities.

 3. Advocacy for Health Equity
   - Actively works to address disparities in dermatologic care by advocating for policy changes, funding, or resources directed toward underserved ethnic communities.
   - Demonstrates leadership in advocating for greater diversity and inclusion in dermatology research, practice, and patient care.

4. Impact on Dermatologic Access and Care
   - Establishes or partners with initiatives that improve access to dermatologic care for ethnic minorities, especially those in rural or economically disadvantaged areas.
   - Works to reduce barriers to dermatologic care, including financial, geographical, or cultural obstacles, for disadvantaged, lower resourced communities.

5. Personal Dedication and Leadership
   - Demonstrates a consistent, personal commitment to the well-being of ethnic communities over time, whether through volunteer work, clinical practice, or other direct efforts.
   - Serves as a role model for other healthcare professionals and advocates for the advancement of dermatology within diverse communities.

6. Collaboration and Community Engagement
   - Collaborates with local organizations, community leaders, or advocacy groups to further health and dermatology initiatives in ethnic communities.
   - Works in partnership with other healthcare providers to ensure a holistic, community-driven approach to improving skin health.

Lifetime Achievement Award
The Lifetime Achievement Award honors a dermatologist who has had a distinguished career marked by exceptional contributions to the field of dermatology for skin of color. This individual has demonstrated continuous leadership, innovation, and a commitment to advancing the specialty through research, education, patient care, and advocacy. Their legacy reflects an enduring impact on the ethnic dermatology community and the broader medical field. The awardee must be a board certified dermatologist in the United States and a member of NMA Dermatology.

Criteria:

1. Exceptional Career Contributions
   - Has made significant, long-lasting contributions to the field of dermatology, particularly focused on the understanding and elimination of health disparities.
   - Demonstrates a distinguished career marked by leadership roles within professional dermatology organizations, educational institutions, or healthcare settings.

2. Pioneering Research and Innovation
   - Has contributed to groundbreaking research, studies, or clinical trials that have advanced the understanding of dermatologic conditions specific to skin of color.
   - Developed or championed new treatment protocols, technologies, or diagnostic methods that address the unique needs of ethnic and diverse patient populations.
   - Demonstrated consistent innovation in addressing disparities in dermatologic care for skin of color, improving patient outcomes.

3. Impact on Dermatology Education
   - Has significantly contributed to the education and training of future dermatologists, particularly through the development of curriculum, mentoring, or leadership in dermatology programs.
   - Played a key role in educating healthcare professionals about the importance of cultural competence in treating skin of color and addressing ethnic disparities in dermatology.
   - Delivered lectures, authored textbooks, or created educational resources that have influenced dermatology education globally.

4. Advocacy and Leadership in Dermatology for Skin of Color
   - Has consistently advocated for the advancement of dermatology research and patient care, either through policy advocacy or involvement in professional organizations.

Mentor of the Year Award
This award is presented to a dermatologist who has demonstrated outstanding dedication to mentoring and developing the next generation of dermatologists. The nominee provides invaluable guidance, support, and inspiration to trainees, residents, and early-career professionals, fostering growth, leadership, and excellence in the field. Their mentorship has significantly influenced the personal and professional development of their mentees, contributing to the future success of the ethnic dermatology community. The awardee must be a board certified dermatologist in the United States and a member of NMA Dermatology.
Criteria:
1. Commitment to Mentorship
   - Demonstrates a strong, consistent commitment to mentoring minority dermatologists, including trainees, residents, and early-career professionals.
   - Provides ongoing guidance and support to mentees, helping them navigate the challenges of the dermatology profession and advance in their careers.

 2. Fostering Personal and Professional Growth
   - Actively supports the personal and professional development of mentees, helping them build confidence, skills, and leadership abilities.
   - Helps mentees develop a clear vision for their career paths, offering practical advice, resources, and encouragement tailored to their individual needs and goals.

   - Encourages mentees to pursue leadership roles within the dermatology community, advocating for their involvement in professional organizations, research, and community outreach.
