The National Medical Association Dermatology Advocacy Committee seeks to bring current and future leaders in dermatology together to actively advocate for dermatologic issues impacting the African American community. Our goal is to advocate for dermatologists as authorities of skin, hair, and nail disorders and leaders of the healthcare team particularly when care involves our most vulnerable patient populations. Our committee recognizes that the only way to improve patient care and outcomes for all Americans is through recognition of and resolution of healthcare disparities, culturally competent patient care, and improved access for historically underserved populations. There is an intricate relationship between lack of diversity within the field and disparities in care and our advocacy work seeks to tackle these issues. We aim to collaborate with organizations with similar missions in an effort to be a collective voice for the underserved.

The National Medical Association Research Committee seeks to create relevant research experiences for African American patients, medical students and private investigators. The research committee is committed to creating a pipeline for NMA Dermatology members to be supported as the principal investigator in research projects that address health disparities in which African Americans carry the burden of disease. Our mission is to find partnership opportunities that help NMA Dermatology design and create robust protocols to address disease burdens in underserved communities. We support research protocols that include studies of relevant disease conditions and diverse study populations. We also support historically underrepresented minority students seeking opportunities to do representative research that ultimately produces relevant data and publications that will improve the treatment outcomes and quality of life of people in the African American community. We aim to partner with organizations looking to amplify a voice for the underserved.
